Welcome to AP Statistics

        &= nbsp;   As stated in the CollegeBoard AP Statistics Course Description:

        &= nbsp;           &nbs= p;   The purpose of the AP course in statistics is to introduce students to &nbs= p;            &= nbsp;           &nbs= p;                   =             &= nbsp;                   =        the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing         &= nbsp;           &nbs= p;            &= nbsp;           &nbs= p;         =             =         &= nbsp;           &nbs= p;       conclusions from data.  Students are expos= ed to four broad conceptual themes.

 

        &= nbsp;           &nbs= p;           1.  Exploring Data: Describing pattern= s and departures from patterns.

        &= nbsp;           &nbs= p;           2.  Sampling and Experimentation:  Planning and Conducting a Study.

        &= nbsp;           &nbs= p;           3.  Anticipating Patterns:  Exploring random phenomena using <= span style=3D'mso-tab-count:4'>        &= nbsp;           &nbs= p;            &= nbsp;           &nbs= p;            &= nbsp;             =                  =         &nb= sp;            =        probability= and simulation.

    &= nbsp;       In Short, it is hoped that you will be prepared to pass the AP Statistics exam= in May, and that you will be college-ready.

Technology:

This course will= use technology in a meaningful and constructive manner.  It is hoped that by actually manipulating the data themselves students will attain a much deeper and more permanent understanding of the concepts taught in this course.  In particular, the TI-89 and The F= athom statistical software package will be used extensively.  For example, Technology will great= ly aid in the instruction of Anticipating Patterns.  For example we will program the TI= -89 to run simulations as when we do the activities concerning sampling concepts a= nd probabilistic games.  Also, we= will use Fathom to aid in simulation explorations and sampling demonstrations as demonstrated on several Fathom computer lab activities:  Random Rectangles, Pocket Pennies,= Dice Rolls, Law of Large Numbers, and other computer lab activities.  Of course, technology will act as a wonderful supplement to the core material covered in the textbook.

        &= nbsp;   Similarly, Technology will greatly aid in our coverage of Statistical Infer= ence.  A conscious use of the TI-89 as a = tool to help perform statistical procedures will aid in the development of Hypothesis Testing and Confidence Intervals.  Fathom will be of particular use h= ere.  NO LESS THAN 9 computer labs have = been scheduled in connection to Inferences for Means and Proportions.  Again, the technology, will serve = as an indispensible supplement to the core material covered in the book.

 

Projects:

        &= nbsp;   Projects will provide an opportunity to apply statistical concepts and = derive connections among statistical concepts and communicate an understanding of statistical concepts.  Each project will be assigned when= the instructor has determined that an adequate amount of material has been covered.  Also, a clear rubric= with exact expectations of each project will accompany each project.  Integral to each = rubric will be requirements pertaining to applying statistical concepts, deriving connections among statistical concepts, and a clear communication of statistical ideas (such as use of appropriate vocabulary and graphical displays).

 

G= rading:

Major Grades (Including Projects):  50%

Daily Grades (Including Homework): 50%

 

Closing:   I want to emphasize two points.  First, you must do the reading to be successful in this course.  Second,  you must write thorough solutions to your questions.  You will get plenty of practice to= write thorough solutions on your homework problems and projects.
